After more than 70 years in the fashion industry, Pierre Cardin died on the 29th of December 2020. The Italian born, naturalised French fashion designer died at the age of 98 and was laid to rest in the Montmartre Cemetery in Paris. Pierre was an inspiration to many in fashion and ushered in a “golden age” with his modern styles after World War II. His ground-breaking and futuristic fashion designs revolutionised fashion in the 1950’s and 60’s.
He became one of the first designers to push out ready-to-wear collections en masse that were affordable to everyone and not just pop stars, actors and models. Cardin expanded his fashion empire internationally, including presenting his collection in Communist China in 1979 and in Moscow’s Red Square in 1991. His vision and success helped many aspiring designers to realise their ambition and find their own success. A fellow French designer, Jean-Paul Gaultier thanked Pierre for “opening the doors to fashion and for making my dream possible.”
